Pre-Need Funeral Planning or pre-arrangement is a thoughtful method of funeral planning. Some people do this with the sincere desire to avoid being a burden on their families. Others like the idea of "having taken care of everything", yet others may have no one else who can make these arrangements for them. Also, the Department of Human Services usually

recommends that families make funeral arrangements prior to the application for Medicaid. Most extended care facilities will also recommend that some type of funeral planning be made when a client enters their facility. Pre-Planning does not necessarily mean pre-funding.

However, for those that desire pre-funding, several options are available, all of which are regulated by the State of Michigan. This allows you to arrange the type of service you prefer and be assured of adequate funds for the future payment of service.

Since January 1, 1991, the Family Independence Agency has recognized that in addition to an irrevocable funeral agreement, the medicaid client can prepay for "burial space" items and have them declared as "non-countable assets". "Burial Space" is defined to include burial plot, gravesite, crypt, mausoleum, casket, urn, niche, vault, headstone, marker, plaque, burial container, care and maintenance of gravesite and arrangements for opening and closing the gravesite.

In addition, the medicaid client may also own prepaid funeral contracts for non-countable items in any amount and regardless of age for his spouse, children, parents, siblings and persons to whom they are married- if the blood relative is still living- and have none of those contracts counted in his asset inventory.
